Court Services

"If courts cannot secure the safety of its judicial officers and the public inside the courthouse doors, they surely cannot secure justice for society beyond them."

Legal Aid Society of Orange County v. Crosson, 784 F. Supp 1127 (S.D.N.Y. 1992)

The security and safety of everyone who occupies the courthouse and its surrounding area is a constant goal of the Greene County Sheriff's Office, so that every form of business at hand may continue, unencumbered, and that the public may be served and protected to the highest extent.

The functions of the Court Services Unit include but are not limited to:
  • A liaison between the Courts and the Sheriff's Office.
  • Providing security for Superior, Juvenile, Probate and Magistrate Courts.
  • Transporting of inmates/prisoners to and from various different locations throughout the state of Georgia and other states.

Court Services

It is the responsibility of the Greene County Sheriff's Office, as set forth in the Georgia Constitution, to provide court security.  The high visibility of the courthouse complex and courtroom: the constant exchange of defendants, some highly dangerous, the multiple influx of citizens, judicial and legal cast, and law enforcement personnel, to name a few, requires that security plans be in place and functioning. Anyone entering through any entrance of the courthouse or its adjacent secured areas is subject to being screened. Aside from the routine screening, a random screening of anyone or everyone may be conducted at the discretion and direction of  Court Services personnel. No one may carry a firearm or dangerous weapon inside the Greene County Courthouse complex, except with approval of the Court Services supervisor, Chief Deputy, or Sheriff. Those persons that are certified peace officers, as defined under Georgia law, will be permitted to carry duty weapons when at the Greene County Courthouse on official law enforcement duty.

Children

Most children will be allowed entry into the courtroom, but must not disrupt court proceedings. A parent or caretaker may be asked to wait outside the courtroom with the child until called upon, if necessary. Small children will be asked to remain outside the courtroom during court proceedings.

Smoking/Chewing

Smoking will only be allowed in designated areas which are located at the front and side entrances of the courthouse. No one is allowed to chew smokeless tobacco or gum inside a courtroom.

Call to Rise

The Court Services supervisor or his designee will employ a clear audible voice before everyone present in the courtroom to rise whenever the presiding judge enters the courtroom or stands to his/her feet while in the courtroom. Everyone in the courtroom shall then stand to his/her feet until instructed by the judge or the Court Services supervisor to be seated.

Plea Positioning

When a defendant stands before a judge, usually during pleas or when assigned, defendants will be asked to refrain from placing their hands in their pockets when standing before the judge. Defendants will also be asked to place aside any objects in their hands including female defendants who will be asked to place their purses aside when standing before the bench.

Courtroom Etiquette

Civilian Dress - Civilians entering the courtroom must abide by the dress code as set forth by the Sheriff of Greene County and must not commit any violations of indecent exposure. Any individual violating such law may be subject to arrest and/or refused entrance into the courtroom. Individuals wearing improper court attire, such as tank tops, shorts, or not wearing shoes, unless approved by the presiding judge, may be refused entry into the courtroom and may be asked to change their clothing before entry is allowed. Men wishing to enter the courtroom will not be allowed to wear a hat or head covering during any session, except by permission of the presiding judge.
